The Francis Effect

The Francis Effect

in 2014, Tania Bruguera spent roughly 15 weeks outside of Guggenheim Museum in New York City gathering signatures from people entering and exiting the museum. These signatures were for a petition for Pope Francis to grant Vatican City citizenship to immigrants, whether documented or undocumented, regardless of race, country of origin, or religion.

Bruguera speaks on her project saying: “You can see something there in their expression. And I think it’s interesting because a lot of people know it is impossible… but the impossible is only impossible until someone makes it possible.”
