Tatlin’s Whisper #5

In 2008, Tania Bruguera hired two policemen to engage with the visitors of the exhibit space of the museum. The policemen would use techniques that they had learned during their training as a way of dictating how the audience would move throughout the space; separating them or gathering them into groups across the gallery space.

By having the policemen perform their daily tasks within the museum, Bruguera intended for the visitors to listen to their directions, without knowing that this was in fact the art piece. She states, “The people do not have to know that it’s art. For me this is very important because once you know it’s art, you start to do other associations that are not exactly what you would do in your everyday life.”
